Cost & pricing questions
How much does it cost to ship a car? +
Car shipping costs depend on several factors — mainly distance, vehicle size, and transport type. As a general guide:
- Short haul under 500 miles: $300–$700
- Mid-range 500–1,500 miles: $600–$1,100
- Cross-country over 1,500 miles: $1,000–$1,600
Use our free calculator for a specific estimate based on your exact route and vehicle.
Is your service really free? +
Yes — 100% free for you, with no hidden fees at any point. We charge carriers a fee to receive leads from serious customers. You never pay us anything. There's no catch.
How accurate is the cost estimate? +
Our estimates are based on real industry pricing data including distance, vehicle size, transport type, and current market conditions. They're typically within 10–15% of what carriers actually quote. Think of it as a realistic ballpark, not a guaranteed price — actual quotes from carriers may be slightly higher or lower depending on availability and timing.
What factors affect the price? +
The main factors that affect car shipping costs are:
- Distance — longer routes cost more in total but less per mile
- Vehicle size — SUVs and trucks cost 10–20% more than sedans
- Transport type — enclosed transport costs 30–50% more than open
- Season — summer and snowbird seasons (Jan–Mar, Oct–Dec) see higher demand
- Route popularity — busy corridors like CA–TX have more competition and lower prices
- Timing flexibility — flexible pickup dates can save $50–$150
Is open or enclosed transport better? +
Open transport is the right choice for most everyday vehicles — it's how 90%+ of cars are shipped. It's safe, affordable, and widely available. Enclosed transport provides full protection from weather and road debris and is recommended for luxury cars, classic cars, exotic vehicles, or any car where cosmetic perfection matters. Enclosed costs 30–50% more than open on the same route.
Are there any hidden fees I should know about? +
Reputable carriers quote all-in prices with no hidden fees. However, always confirm with your carrier whether the quoted price includes door-to-door delivery or terminal pickup. If your vehicle is non-operational, expect a surcharge of $150–$200. Expedited shipping (guaranteed pickup date) also adds cost.
How it works questions
How many carriers will contact me? +
Up to 5 licensed auto transport carriers will reach out by phone, email, or text — typically within 2–4 hours of your submission. Each will offer their best price for your specific route. You're under no obligation to use any of them.
How long does it take to get quotes? +
Most customers hear from their first carrier within 2 hours. All carriers typically respond within 24 hours. If you submit on a weekend or holiday, expect slightly longer response times.
What if I change my mind after submitting? +
No problem — just don't respond to carriers who contact you. There's no cancellation needed, no fees, and no obligation. If you want us to stop sending your info to additional carriers, contact us and we'll take care of it immediately.
Can I ship more than one vehicle? +
Yes — submit a separate quote request for each vehicle. Mention to carriers that you have multiple vehicles when they call — some carriers offer multi-vehicle discounts.
Do I need to be present for pickup and delivery? +
You or a designated person should be present at both pickup and delivery to inspect the vehicle and sign the bill of lading (the shipping contract). Some carriers will work with a trusted proxy if you genuinely can't be there — confirm this with your carrier before booking.
Shipping & transit questions
How long does car shipping take? +
Transit times depend on distance:
- Under 500 miles: 1–3 days
- 500–1,500 miles: 3–6 days
- 1,500–2,500 miles: 6–8 days
- Over 2,500 miles (cross-country): 7–10 days
These are estimates. Carriers will give you a specific pickup and delivery window when you book.
Is my vehicle insured during transport? +
All carriers in our network are required to carry cargo insurance that covers your vehicle during transport. Before booking, ask your carrier for their insurance certificate and confirm what the coverage limit is. For high-value vehicles, you may want to check whether your personal auto insurance provides supplemental coverage during transport.
Can I ship a non-running vehicle? +
Yes — most carriers can ship non-operational vehicles using winch loading equipment. Expect an additional surcharge of $150–$250. Make sure to tell carriers upfront that the vehicle doesn't run, as not all carriers have the right equipment.
Can I put personal items in my car during shipping? +
Most carriers technically allow a small amount of personal items in the trunk (under 100 lbs), but this is done at your own risk. Carriers are not liable for damage to or theft of personal items. It's best to remove all valuables from your vehicle before transport.
What should I do to prepare my car for shipping? +
- Remove all personal items and valuables
- Take photos of your vehicle from all angles before pickup
- Leave only about a quarter tank of fuel
- Disable any aftermarket alarms
- Note any existing damage and make sure it's recorded on the bill of lading at pickup
- Remove or secure any exterior accessories (roof racks, spoilers etc.)
What if my car is damaged during transport? +
If you notice damage at delivery, document it immediately with photos and note it on the bill of lading before signing. Do not sign a clean bill of lading if there is damage. Contact the carrier's insurance company directly with your documented claim. This is why taking photos before pickup is so important.
Do you ship to Hawaii or Alaska? +
Yes — we have carriers in our network that handle Hawaii and Alaska shipments. These routes typically involve a combination of ground transport and sea freight. Costs and transit times are higher than continental US routes — use our calculator and carriers will provide specific quotes for these routes.
